Wagons of firewood in our custom desgined kilns

There has been discussion about how fireplace wood is handled to produce a product that burns better.

At West End Firewood, we implement several practices to ensure the production of superior fireplace and campfire wood.

Firstly, we cut wood at a consistent length and width. Using a custom 12-way splitter, nearly all split wood comes out in a uniform size. The few pieces that don’t meet our standards are repurposed for fuel in our custom-built kiln.

Secondly, all our cut wood undergoes 2-stage seasoning in large stocks in our yards. Once as log-length trees, and then again after splitting in the firewood pits. After a prolonged period, they are transferred in large vented carts to the kiln for either our "The Hearth Warmer" kiln-dried packaged firewood product, or kiln-dried cord-wood.

Thirdly, the wood undergoes air drying in the kiln for several days at high temperatures. Large fans circulate air around the chambers and between the wood to ensure consistent temperature throughout. This process effectively eliminates any insects and removes a significant portion of moisture. However, it's important to retain a small percentage of moisture in the wood. Through decades of experience, we've found that this helps the wood burn longer in a fireplace, providing a consistent flame and comfort.
